POST SHOOT INTERVIEW WITH DESTENE MARIE
Damaged / Goods :What led you to originally pursue a career in modeling ?
Destene Marie: I became interested in modeling from a very young age. A family friend was a beauty pageant queen and former model, and my parents had me take some classes with her when I was around 12 to instill confidence, and from that first introduction I fell in love with the industry. She used to invite me over to her house and try on her designer clothes, which at the time were all way too big for me, and I would practice my walk in her hallway. Looking back on it, I probably looked like a little girl playing dress up but I felt like a supermodel in the making haha. When I moved to New York City the dream became an actual opportunity to pursue a career, and I jumped on it!
Damaged: Who would you say is your ultimate fashion inspiration ?
Destine: I'm obsessed with 60s fashion. It was such a turning point for women, politically and socially, and its all reflected in the trends of the time. I love it all; the elegant, fitted suits to the super short mini's and beehive hair. It was a time of liberation and confidence. I remember seeing images of Marsha Hunt looking like a total rock star in her leather shorts and boho dresses and this beautiful afro and thinking how powerful and sexy she looked. I try to channel my inner 60s power woman whenever I'm feeling less than confident.
Damaged: Favorite fashion brands ?
Destene: So difficult to pin down just one, because I feel like my style covers a wide range. But I love the glam sports style of Michael Kohrs for that every day wear, the elegance and femininity of Riccardo Tischi and Zac Posen, and the effortless chic of Isabel Marant.
Damaged: In terms of music, who are your top artists of the moment ?
Destene: I can never get tired of Amy Winehouse. Ta-Ku is my creative go to. I'm in love with Jamie Woon's beautiful voice. And yesterday I was dancing my heart out in the shower to Disclosure.
Whats your damage ?
Destene: I grew up a complete book worm, graduated with a double major in Pre-Med and Biological Anthropology from NYU. I'veloved being an academic, and originally planned for Med school! But the arts has always been a competing passion to my love for science, and it was so difficult for me to tear myself away from my perfectly planned out life and pursue something as unpredictable and unreliable as a career in fashion and acting. There were many nights of indecision, panic, and unadulterated fear, but I've taken that leap and completely switched my life path. The challenge has been an overwhelming and pivotal moment of growth for me as a young woman. I've learned I'm much more resilient and capable than I could've ever imagined. I don't regret one moment!
