POST SHOOT INTERVIEW WITH BENJI STAKER

Damaged / Goods :What led you to originally pursue a career in modeling ?

Benji Staker: I sort of happened upon modeling as a career.  I was scouted by a friend of my mother agency Heffner while I was attending college in Seattle, then after graduation I moved to LA with my boyfriend and began modeling full time.  It really worked out because my degree was in Fine Arts and art history, and I was struggling to find a job or make any money using my education.  After a while I came to really enjoy it and so here I am.

Damaged: Who would you say is your ultimate fashion inspiration ?

Benji: My personal fashion is inspired by the homeless woman that lives around the corner from my apartment building.  She is always so fabulous.

Damaged: Favorite fashion brands ?

Benji:I'm super into Gucci this season.  One day I'll give in and blow an entire paycheck on one of those leather jackets.

Damaged: In terms of music, who are your top artists of the moment ?

Benji: My favorite musical artist will always be my boyfriend Chris Kittrell of Baby Alpaca.  I'm also currently super into some classics such as Annie Lennox and the Cranberries, Fiona Apple and some others that I've been really into lately are the dirty projectors, Bjork and Beach House

Whats your damage ?

Benji: An easy answer would be to say growing up gay in a smaller community that didn't embrace me.  Now that I'm a bit older and surrounded by loving people, I'm  inspired to appreciate and embrace the freedom of being who I am and express my love as openly and loudly as I want to.

Another major life event was my decision to go into art school instead of choosing a more stable career path.  The future is very uncertain, but that education really changed the way that I look at and think about everything.  That decision was really important in letting loose my wild imagination and I'm really glad that I did. It also gave me the freedom to pursue things like modeling that I may have never been able to otherwise.
