POST-SHOOT INTERVIEW MAKEUP ARTIST CARLY LIM
Damaged / Goods: What led you to pursue a career in beauty?
Carly Lim: I’ve always had an interest in Fashion. In high school, I remember scouring through the library’s small selection of Japanese magazines, fascinated by the makeup tutorials. Straight after high school, I went to university and ended up in a Chemistry program. Half way through my degree, I realized that I had been creatively depriving myself for ages.
Back then, blogs were starting out and I was spending hours on The Sartorialist, subconsciously memorizing all the names of designers and models instead of chemical mechanisms. When I graduated college, I used my life savings and moved to NYC to study makeup. Best decision I’ve ever made!
Damaged: Ultimate beauty tip?
Carly: Invest in good skin care! There are a lot of great and affordable ones. Wear something that makes you feel great, put a smile on your face, make your eyes sparkle and do you.
Damaged: Favorite beauty trend?
Carly: I don’t believe in trends. I love seeing people incorporating makeup into their lifestyle and persona for example @insect.eyes @isshehungry @creepyyeha
Damaged: Go to look for a night out?
Carly: In a hurry, I will choose a bold lip. If I have time, a bold eye whether it be a colorful graphic eye liner or shimmering metallic smoky eye.
Damaged: What’s on your playlist?
Carly: Jorja Smith, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino.
What’s your damage?
Carly: I naively expected London to be like NYC but it's much more of a slow burn. If you let them in, things can chip away at yourself belief and confidence in your art. But when I do a rough timeline and add up my achievements and the wonderful people I've met - it's been so incredible.
